Top 5 Tips for a Girl’s Getaway in Playa del Carmen

We all know that girls just want to have sun! Playa del Carmen is the perfect place for a sunny girls’ getaway at the beach. Just a 35-minute drive south from the Cancun International Airport, Playa del Carmen is a bustling tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, street market shopping, a vibrant nightlife experience, and endless adventures exploring Quintana Roo.

I’m excited to share my top tips from our trip. Here’s how to plan a perfect girls trip. Let’s go girls!

Tip 1: Stay Downtown
For a 3 or 4-day girls’ trip, consider staying downtown to be closer to la playa – the beach – and within walking distance to shopping and nightlife. Downtown is close to the action, so you will not need to call a taxi or arrange private transportation to most attractions.

Our favorite hotel activity was admiring the ocean views from the rooftop pool, Purobeach. We danced to all the music, drank all the poolside cocktails, and – most importantly – took all the Instagram worthy photos.

Tip 2: Explore Quinta Avenida
This wouldn’t be a girls’ trip guide without a full section dedicated to shopping! Quinta Avendia, or Avenue 5, is a street market extravaganza by day and rhythm-filled club experience by night.

Plan to be on Fifth Avenue for 3 hours or more if you are planning to shop. Also, be prepared to face the hustle and bustle of shopping tourists and the insistent salesmen vying for your attention.

Major key: Don’t be afraid to bargain! The salesmen know that they’re selling the exact same items as the next shop, so talk them down to a lower price. Always stay within a reasonably fair amount because this is their livelihood…no low balling! Also, consider keeping your money in different areas on your person, wallet for bargaining. You can easily pull out a set amount of cash and say, “I only have this much, is this ok?” Usually, it is!

Fifth Avenue at night is the ultimate partying experience. Nightlife picks up around 11 pm and there aren’t any bad choices for night clubs.

Here are the top night clubs we visited:

La Vaquita: This is a popular spot overall and was packed both nights we went. Go here for Top 40 music of all genres.

Mandala: The rooftop is where it’s at! It was an awesome mix of hip hop and Top 40 music.

Abolengo: This spot is popular with locals. They mix in Reggaeton and Latin music into the Top 40 pop and hip hop hits.

Tip 3: Hit the Playa Early in the Day
Get to the beach early to avoid the crowds, find a great hangout, and beat the afternoon sun. The public beach is free to access, but you may have to pay for a lounge chair or umbrella.

We planned a fun photo shoot that led us to Calle 2 Beach. Although this popular beach is public we still enjoyed the views and visited some of the snack stands nearby for fruit cups and churros.

Tip 4: Mix It Up with Fancy and Economical Restaurants
Dining in Riviera Maya Mexico can be as luxurious or as economical as you desire to make it. We enjoyed splurging on just a few meals and going with more reasonably prices street options for lunch and snacks.

Alux – The renowned restaurant in an underground cavern filled with charm. The menu is a fusion between Mexican cuisine and seafood. This location is pricey so I suggest making a late reservation for dessert and cocktails only to fulfill this experience.

El Fogon – The local hot spot for street tacos, which come at about $.50 per taco. My personal favorites are al pastor, barbacoa, and carne. Make them super spicy with the salsa verde!

Acá Los Tacos – Another local taco hot spot. It’s open very late, so stop by for your favorite taco before calling it a night.

Patio 8 – Mexican cuisine meets an open-air, upscale sports-bar style restaurant. The queso fundido, guacamole, and ceviche were all excellent.

Tip 5: Create an itinerary all the girls will enjoy!
We built our itinerary around great food, nightlife, pool time, and beach time, all while not over-planning anything. The one thing we were meticulous in planning was our adventure to Rio Secreto Caverns & Caves.

Rio Secreto is an unbelievable underground river and cave system nestled in a beautiful nature preserve. The tour includes your wet suit, life jacket, helmet with a lamp, and a knowledgeable tour guide who carefully navigates your group through 1.5 miles of caverns. Personal cameras are not allowed on this tour, be sure to pack your credit card to purchase the photos taken by the tour photographer. After the excursion, you end the experience with a buffet lunch.
