4 Ways to Explore the Nightlife in Shanghai
If you are looking for a watering hole in Shanghai, you can rest easy. In fact, there are so many excellent choices that making a decision on which one to visit may become your most difficult task.
If you are adventurous and want to venture out on your own, I suggest that you start with some of my favorites. These will help you get to know the scene in Shanghai and provide some excellent variety.
Salute – What started off as a hole-in-the-wall has since grown into a full-blown wine bar that serves a small selection of wines (the house wine is of good quality and a steal!). They also serve up small plates like charcuterie, cheese etc. You should try the Focaccia and prosciutto with your drinks.
Speak Low – This is a compelling example of Shanghai’s version of a Speakeasy. In keeping with the theme, I will not give too much away, but it is an absolute must-visit! This place boasts two levels to explore, but we suggest a visit to the 3rd floor. Not to leave you completely in the dark; be sure to sit by the bar and watch the bartender whip up some amazing flavors in what feels like a Cocktail Theatre! Although there is a drink to fit any palate, I recommend that you ask the bartender for his favorite. If you visit over the weekend, I encourage you get there early, as this place is busy!
The Botanist – Definitely a must-visit for those that crave mixologist-created cocktails. One favorite is the #111 with cucumber, lime, white cocoa, Frangelico and gin; it is crisp and fresh with just a tinge of sweetness. If you want to be a little more daring, ask the mixologist to surprise you with something they enjoy making. Best spot is a seat at the bar.
Shake – A new haunt in town that is for the “thirsty traveller” and is perfect if you want to shake a leg, or two, in a 1960’s style supper club. That’s right, queue up the nostalgic feel complimented by a LIVE band to get you in the groove.
Liquid Laundry – Stop at one of my all-time favorites, a must for locals and visitors alike. They serve up a good selection of craft beer, cocktails and wine selection; they also offer an extensive food menu to compliment your drinks. Be sure to try the pork belly served with Mango Sauce!
If these suggestions still leave you feeling a little lost, you can also get a head start by looking for any one of the many companies that host Pub Crawls. Very popular with tourists, sponsored pub crawls take you to many different places over the course of an evening to experience the best nightlife in Shanghai.
No matter how you spend your evenings exploring, you are certainly in for a treat in Shanghai. The nightlife here is worth exploring, and will leave eager to make a return to discover more.
