6 Fun Things to do in Downtown San Diego with Kids

Ride Bikes On The Boardwalk
The city-sponsored DecoBike program has stations located across downtown San Diego, ideal for hopping on and tooling down the boardwalk. There is a station a short walk from the Hilton. The kids loved riding all the way down the boardwalk to Seaport Village and The Headquarters, a quirky collection of shops and restaurants with live music, a carousel and tons of people watching.

USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum
There is so much cool history packed into the Midway, your family could spend hours touring this enormous vessel. From the engine rooms all the way up to the flight deck, volunteers and tour guides bring war stories to life, with some sharing their own stories of service on the Midway. You can even sit in the cockpit of the aircraft manned by Maverick (Tom Cruise) in the movie Top Gun, which was filmed in San Diego.

Padres Game at Petco Park
When the season starts in April, Padres home games are literally across the street from the Hilton. Walk across the pedestrian bridge and you are at the front entrance to the ballpark. Make sure you try the famous San Diego fish tacos inside the ballpark, where the adults can wash that down with a nice craft brew from one of San Diego’s many local breweries.

Stroll The Historic Gaslamp Quarter
Developed in the 1860s and the center of San Diego for many decades, the Gaslamp Quarter has gone through an urban renaissance to become a bustling collection of restaurants, shops, galleries and more. Original Victorian buildings are mixed with newer developments in a 16-block walkable neighborhood. Our kids love to window shop at Urban Outfitters and then grab an ice cream sundae at Ghirardelli Chocolate Company.

Ferry To Coronado Island
Right next to the Midway Museum, ferries run across the bay to Coronado every hour. The kids thought it was hilarious to bring bikes onto the ferry, scoot across the bay while enjoying an amazing view of the skyline, and then ride down Orange Avenue in Coronado to the beach. Check ferry schedules and ticket prices from Flagship Cruises.

New Children’s Museum
The younger kids really love the New Children’s Museum, where they can think, play and create through a series of programs and exhibits designed to inspire kids in many cool and surprising ways. All the exhibitions are hands-on because, let’s face it, kids love to touch, and it is encouraged here! Check schedules for what’s happening now since the curators are always introducing new things.

Fun things to do in downtown San Diego with kids - Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel pool
Positioned directly across the boardwalk, the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel pool overlooks the water, sailboats, palm trees and more.

And if all that is not enough to keep you and your brood plenty busy, the pool at Hilton San Diego Bayfront is pretty spectacular. Right on the bay with glass walls overlooking the water, the pool area includes a kiddie splash zone and water slide, a large heated saltwater pool, and a good-sized hot tub.
