5 Fun and Free Activities in Charlotte, NC for Kids
ImaginOn is a collaboration between the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. The 102,000 square-foot facility offers an extensive library collection, with a teens-only library along with one dedicated to the age 11 and under crowd. The center also houses a state-of-the-art theater.
Special activities, like Family Story Time, are held daily while other activities like Rookie Science, Story Explorers, and Learn, Connect, Play are held throughout the week. Check the schedule for more information; ImaginOn is closed on Sundays.
First Ward Park
Near ImaginOn is one of the newest parks in the city: First Ward Park. The park offers walking trails for summer days as well as a Music Box Lunch series from May to August with musical performances every Tuesday from noon to 1:30 pm. Children can also enjoy playing games of giant chess and Connect Four.
Head to a Sprayground
There are few things more fun in the summer than running through a sprinkler and cooling off during the summer heat. Luckily for all the children, many of Charlotte’s parks include free spraygrounds where kids can play, splash, and escape the Charlotte heat for a moment. Spraygrounds can be found in Cordelia Park (which also offers a pool), Latta Park, and Romare Bearden Park, among others.
Reed Gold Mine
One of the first documented gold finds in the U.S., Reed Gold Mine is now open to the public for exploring. The Reed Gold Mine includes many historic structures, as well as a visitors center that offers exhibits on gold and mining technology, among other things. Tours of the mine are free and held on the hour. For a $3 fee, it is possible to pan gold as well. Reed Gold Mine is closed on Sundays, Mondays and major holidays.
Reedy Creek Park and Nature Reserve
Reedy Creek Park and Nature Reserve is one of the best nature reserves in the area, serving as home to many animals, including 109 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 20 species of reptiles and 12 species of amphibians. The 10 miles of trails make it the perfect place for an afternoon spent looking for creatures after a morning spent fishing.
