The 4 Best Ways to Enjoy Avocados in San Diego

  • avocado, guacamole, brussels sprouts, chiles, puesto, restaurant, san diego

  • avocado, toast, pumpernickel, basil, subterranean, restaurant, san diego

  • avocado, tuna, acqua, restaurant, san diego

The avocado is undeniably the most popular fruit in San Diego. Very few San Diegans can deny it’s creamy dreaminess, and we have found a special place for the avocado in nearly every meal (waffles anyone?). Thanks to its growing popularity, and healthy fats to boot, the avocado can now be found nationwide. But don’t be fooled; San Diego is one of THE BEST places to enjoy one.

Puesto at the Headquarters: @eatpuesto

With San Diego’s proximity to Mexico, guacamole had to make the list! However, for a San Diego twist, you will want to make your way to Puesto at the Headquarters near Seaport Village. They mix up 4 different varieties of guacamole to fit any flavor. My favorite includes seared Brussels sprouts and serrano chiles. Trust me on this one! You may consider stopping in to take an order to go so you can enjoy it bayside and stroll the eclectic surf, magic and candle shops in Seaport Village. My recommendation is to park it at the bar and enjoy this special savory guac with an ice-cold margarita.

Subterranean Café at North Park: @subterraneancoffeeboutique

If artsy-chic is more your vibe, head over to North Park San Diego’s Subterranean Café. In this revived neighborhood you’ll find trendy consignment shops, local craft breweries and bars, and art galleries galore. The tasty breakfast selection at the Subterranean Café will set you up right for a day of exploring or before a bar or café crawl. Order the Avocado Toast on pumpernickel – topped with diced tomatoes and fresh basil, it delivers an excellent spin to a simple dish. I like to enjoy it with a rose-infused chai latte and then recommend buzzing your way over to the Pigment across the street; it’s like home goods for hipsters!

Acqua in Mission Bay: @SanDiegoHilton

A hidden gem of San Diego (while not that hidden at all) is Mission Bay. This area is most frequented by locals who enjoy an active lifestyle. There are great running paths along the bay, plentiful parking (whoo hoo!), jet ski zones, and a fabulous dog park. To recharge after a day racking up those steps on your Fitbit, come to Acqua at the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa. Start with the fresh ahi tuna topped with avocado and chili oil for the most refreshing way to end your active day. When you’re done, stroll along the boardwalk toward Tecolote Shores to catch the windsurfers, or get out on the water yourself with some stand up paddle boarding.

Café Gratitude in Little Italy: @CafeGratitude

Okay, so you know you are in California when… you are ordering your dessert at a gourmet vegan restaurant by proclaiming the Mantra “I am Awakening.” Awakening is the name of the gorgeous Café Gratitude’s Vegan Key Lime Pie. Its creamy texture comes from blended avocados among fresh citrusy lime, and other clever, tasty vegan ingredients. It’s one dessert that you will actually feel good about finishing, and trust me, you will.

San Diego is truly a unique destination for any traveler looking for an escape that boasts something for everyone. Relax, and enjoy the sights, the surf, the sun, and don’t forget the avocados.
