Best Things to do in Orlando when it Rains
Orlando is an exciting destination for families and a lot of the fun is based outside at outdoor theme parks and water parks. However, if you find yourself in the area when the weather is bad, don’t let that ruin your vacation! Here are are some of the best things to do in Orlando when it rains.
Splitsville Luxury Lanes
Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney) is the perfect spot for rainy day bowling. Splitsville is an upscale, retro bowling alley and restaurant that has 30 bowling lanes, billiards, live music and food. This is a fun spot to play and eat a meal at the same time. It’s a good idea to call ahead and reserve a lane and table.
Also in Disney Springs is Disney Quest, an interactive indoor theme park created by the folks at Disney. It does not have any traditional rides, instead there are five floors of virtual games, 3D experiences and classic video games. For example, one of the adventures is CyberSpace Mountain where you design your own roller coaster on a computer system and then when it’s finished you hop into a simulator and experience your custom-made coaster!
Shopping at The Florida Mall
The Florida Mall is located in Orlando only a few miles from the theme parks. If you have bad weather and want to stay inside there are several unique kid-oriented stores.
The Crayola Experience is a hands-on activity place with 25 interactive attractions that allow kids to express their creativity in a colorful way. While visiting the Crayola store is free, tickets are required to participate in the Crayola Experience activities. Plan on spending at least a few hours here getting creative.
M&M’s World is located in the mall and is a delicious and fun stop for kids. The store even has a “Color Mood analyzer.”
American Girl Store and Bistro
For families who are fans of American Girl there is a store with shopping, a doll hair salon, and a bistro where you can dine with your doll.
If you are trying to stay dry then it might be a good time to have a leisurely meal at one of Orlando’s family-friendly theme restaurants. Here are a few to think about for lunch or dinner.
NBA City in Universal CityWalk is the first NBA themed restaurant and the basketball fans in your family will have a great time. Even kids and family members who don’t love the sport will enjoy the lively atmosphere and arcade games. The main dining area offers traditional American/sports pub meals. The arcade area has hoops games and the chance to have your picture taken as if you are playing in an NBA game.
Eating at Rainforest Cafe in Disney Springs is meant to be like dining in the Amazon. The tropical environment with colorful replicas of birds and animals sets the stage and the sound of thunderstorms and rain makes you feel like you are in a rainforest. Fortunately the menu is all-American with plenty of choices for kids.
If you have any dinosaur lovers in your family T-Rex Cafe in Disney Springs is the place for you. You will feel like you have traveled to prehistoric times with the life sized dinosaurs surrounding you. Watch out for the meteor showers that “hit” every 20 minutes! And young kids will like the Paleo Zone which is a hands-on play area.
Although not a “theme restaurant” the McDonald’s on Sand Lake Road in Orlando has the largest McDonald’s PlayPlace in the world! Besides all the McDonald’s foods kids like, it has a kid’s club tree house and over 100 arcade games. It is currently being renovated and will be even larger and more appealing to kids, but it is open during the renovation process which is expected to be completed in Spring 2016.
You may have to plan in advance to get tickets to a show, but it is something worth considering for a memorable experience with your family.
LA Nouba by Cirque du Soleil
La Nouba is a theatrical and acrobatic performance by the well-known entertainment troupe Cirque Du Soleil. The show is described as a “stunning Cirque Du Soleil performance designed to stimulate your imagination and senses with daring acrobatics, dazzling choreography and unique characters.” It is performed in the Disney Springs area.
Blue Man Group
A popular show at Universal CityWalk is the long running performance Blue Man Group. This show includes original music, comedy and high energy fun and is suitable for families.
Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek
If you are staying at a hotel like Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek then you can have a great time even in a downpour. My kids loved the Fun Zone at the hotel which had games, prizes and air hockey. A perfect spot on a rainy day!
Hopefully you will only have great weather while visiting the Sunshine State, but if you find yourself dealing with bad weather on vacation, I hope these ideas on things to do in Orlando when it rains will help you and your family!
