5 Reasons to Stay at Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa

I love to gaze at maps. I can stare for hours, pining to visit exotic countries in the far-reaching corners of the earth. And I love getting passport stamps. Both are like obsessions to me. So when my family was in the planning stages of a trip to South Africa, on a whim I decided to tack on a side trip to Mauritius. At first I didn’t even know how to pronounce it, but a little island in the Indian Ocean that is politically stable seemed like just the perfect place to unwind for a week with the family. And we could all get a unique stamp in our passports!

Where is Mauritius?
Mauritius (sounds like: more-ish-is) is located approximately 1,200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa and has a tropical coastline with a mountainous interior. It is a multicultural country; English is the official language, but French or Creole is what everyone seems to speak the most. And, if your kids are PBS Wild Kratts enthusiasts, they will undoubtedly know Mauritius was also home to the now extinct Dodo bird, which by the way is the picture used for their passport stamps.

Why Visit Mauritius with Kids
There were several deciding factors in our visit Mauritius: it is easily accessible from South Africa (four-hour flight from Johannesburg); it is tropical so we could swim and snorkel; it’s politically stable and most of all — family-friendly!

Choosing a Mauritius Resort
Once we decided on Mauritius, the next decision was where to stay. Obviously lodging can really make or break a holiday, and with young kids a family-friendly resort is a must. However, I will not compromise on creature comforts we enjoy while on holiday such as cleanliness, good service and comfort.

After reading reviews of numerous Mauritius resorts, we decided Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa fit our needs. I find Hilton hotels have uncompromising standards, even internationally, and I appreciate their predictability when I am tired and far away from home.

Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa
Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa is a little gem nestled in the seaside village of Flic en Flac surrounded by lush vegetation and the inviting water of the Indian Ocean. My family doesn’t necessarily prefer resort hotels as they can be full of fluff and extra expenses (when we are already spending a fortune). We like to get out and experience the local culture and food scene. But at Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa we literally had to tear ourselves away and commit to activities outside the resort because there were so many fun activities we didn’t want to miss — and most are complimentary! The resort truly caters to the entire family.

Yearning to bask in the African sunshine and dip your toes in the warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean? Then you should seriously consider a holiday to Mauritius, and don’t look any further than a stay at Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa.

Here are my top 5 reasons why this a perfect family-friendly resort:

Complimentary Water Sports
What really sets this resort apart from the rest is their amazing array of complimentary water sports. Yep, the adventurer in you will be so dazzled by everything offered that you really won’t want to go anywhere else! There are daily complimentary snorkeling trips, dolphin watching, glass bottom boat rides, windsurfing, waterskiing, paddle boarding, and kayaking, to name a few. The staff at the water sport shack were always super helpful and eager to show us a good time.

The highlight for our family was snorkeling, and the guides were awesome and playful with the kids. They took us to a wonderful reef teeming with fish and sea life where we explored until we were exhausted. They were excellent with our kids and seemed to really enjoy hanging with us for the afternoon. Sound too good to be true? You need to come check it out and see for yourself!

Tip: Make sure you sign up for activities when you first arrive. They limit the amount of participants for many activities and space fills up quickly.

Kidz Paradise Kids Club
As much as we love spending time with the littles, it’s also nice to have some adult time while on vacation. Even an hour for ourselves can be rejuvenating and well-deserved. Well, don’t think twice about dropping your kids off at Kidz Paradise! It’s open daily and FREE for guests under 12 years of age! No need to sign up ahead of time as walk-ins are gladly welcomed.

My kids loved Kidz Paradise and it provided us the opportunity to have some grown-up time without stressing about the kids having fun. This colorful building on the south end of the resort is fenced and supervised at all times with friendly staff. They have a lovely outdoor playground full of toys for all ages, and when the kids have had enough sun, there are plenty of activities inside to keep them entertained. There is even a quiet nap area for the younger children. They aren’t kidding when they say it’s Kidz Paradise, and when your kids request to go hang out there, you know it’s good.

Refreshing Pools
The resort did not skimp when it came to their pools. There are two heated pools and one hot tub. One of the pools is designated for families and the other is an adults-only saltwater infinity pool. We spent most of our time in the family-friendly pool, and it was heated perfectly. It is built in a circular fashion, winds under exotic wooden bridges, and is outlined by waterfalls and beautiful flowers. It just felt so tropical!

Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa - pool
The pool at Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa is surrounded by rock waterfalls and gorgeous flowers.

We spent the majority of our time here, and we all made so many friends. It was fascinating to meet people from around the world at the pool; it really was like the main social scene for families. Although there isn’t poolside service, both pools are close to bars and restaurants. That was one item I feel they could improve on: offer poolside service so guests don’t have to leave their lounges and kids to get lunch or drinks.

Daily Activities
Not only are there complimentary water sports to keep you busy, there are numerous activities offered daily as well. You will almost need a personal assistant to help keep track of everything! When you arrive you will be given a calendar of what is offered during that particular week, and again most are complimentary or just have a nominal fee.

Some activities are geared for kids, and others are for older kids to adults. I took advantage of a water aerobics class that was offered every morning, and the kids tried the tennis clinic one afternoon. Other activities include but are not limited to: bike riding, tai-chi, yoga, tennis for both kids and adults, and even horseback riding. You can see why it was hard to leave the resort!

Luxurious Spa
Usually once during my vacations I enjoy a nice massage. It is so relaxing and rejuvenating after a long travel day, and it’s nice to have a little “Mommy” time. I was fortunate to spend a couple of hours getting a massage and simply relaxing in the holistic atmosphere of the Hilton Mauritius Spa.

Entering the calm and tranquil lobby I felt my stress immediately dissipate. They offer a full range of services you can indulge in and also have a hydrotherapy bath, sauna, and steam room. Before my massage, I was encouraged to use the steam room to open up pores and relax my muscles. I chose to have an hour-long massage and was offered a range of aromatherapies that seduced my senses during my treatment.

After I was done, I relaxed in a lounge chair that overlooks a peaceful garden with a little pool and water feature. It proved to be just what I needed to get my balance back.

Tip: The resort is on an island in the Indian Ocean so don’t except high-speed internet. Just put your electronics away and enjoy everything the resort offers!
