We Loved Our Stay at Hilton Bogotá!

Our family just returned from spring break in Colombia which included a five-day stay in Bogotá, the country’s vast, energetic, high-altitude capital. While in town, we stayed at Hilton Bogotá, an excellent base camp for exploring the city and its surrounding areas.

The hotel is located on the north side of Bogotá, in the heart of the financial district, close to many restaurants, entertainment and shopping. Interestingly, this is also an area of Bogotá known for housing many embassies which, we realized, means added security (we noticed a lot of police in the area at all times). Besides its location, we liked the hotel’s size. Hilton Bogotá definitely feels like a big name hotel, but because of its relatively small footprint as well as decor, it has a cozy feel to it. See why we think this unique property is one of the best hotels in Bogotá.

Spacious Rooms
The two rooms our family shared (one king and one with two double bed) were modern, spacious and impeccably clean. I especially liked the small walk in closet which connected our room with the bathroom and provided ample space for storage. Some hotels don’t have enough room for everyone’s belongings, and this is even more noticeable when staying for a longer period of time. I should mention that our two rooms did not have connecting doors, which wasn’t particularly bothersome for us as parents of two tweens. However, if you are a family with younger children, a suite may be a better option.

Excellent Bogotá Restaurants
We very much enjoyed the hotels La Ventana restaurant, one of the dining options at Hilton Bogotá. The breakfast buffet every morning was simply outstanding, full of authentic, delicious, as well as healthy choices. We especially liked the juices made from local tropical fruits such as guanabana (sour sop), a large assortment of in-season fruit (purple passion fruit was my personal favorite), the many freshly baked pastries and breads (don’t skip the home made mango preserves!), as well as made-to-order omelets.

The wonderful breakfast spread at La Ventana restaurant made for a great start each day in Bogotá.

We also tried La Ventana for dinner on our first night in town, which was outstanding. We loved that fact that it serves Colombian cuisine, but with a contemporary twist. The grilled octopus and short ribs we ordered were great examples of this fusion, both fantastic and beautifully presented. The executive chef Nicolas Piatti certainly knows what he is doing. The restaurant also boasts an impressive wine cellar with a large representation of South American wines. Our merlot from Chile, skillfully recommended by our wonderful server, was a perfect match for both of our dishes.

The hotel houses Devotion, a lovely coffee bar open all day and well known by the neighborhood. It serves the highest end, organically produced Colombian coffee, strong and rich with flavor. They made us some of the prettiest cappuccinos I’ve ever had.

If you are in the mood for drinks or want some quick snacks, you should head to the Levels Bar at the back of the hotel by the pool area. It was a great place to chill, watch sports and there is even a live DJ on select nights.

Speaking of the pool, it is heated and we loved it. It was such an enjoyable place to come “home” to after a full day of sightseeing to relax. Our kids loved splashing around in the pool while the adults enjoyed a nice cup of Colombian coffee at the adjoining sitting area, before we all headed out again for dinner.

Excellent Service
From the moment we checked in at Hilton Bogotá until our departure, we received excellent service all around. It was easy to see that the property is well run and that the employees truly care about making sure every guest feels valued and has a great experience. I should mention that the hotel mostly caters to business travelers, which can be a less than ideal experience for families with children. However, not the case at Hilton Bogotá!

One evening, for example, after having returned to our rooms from dinner, they surprised our kids with a knock on the door and a tray of the most delicious freshly baked cookies dipped in chocolate along with a pitcher of frothed milk. The milk, we were told, was hopefully the right temperature for them…not too cold, because “warm milk helps you sleep better” and not too hot so “they don’t burn their mouths.” Our two Goldilocks were beyond thrilled and definitely had sweet dreams that night. It’s the small details and gestures that often count the most in the hospitality business and Hilton Bogotá seems to really get it.

As if our stay at Hilton Bogotá wasn’t already special enough, we were lucky to be at the property at the same time as the Colombian national soccer team (known as “sele,” short for selección), which was in town to train for their upcoming match with Bolivia. I should add that we are huge, really huge soccer fans. I’m mentioning this not to brag that we were able to see most of the players and snap a picture of James Rodrigues (which we did!), but because such prominent guests are another testament to the quality and professionalism of the property.

We’re not the only ones who think this is the best hotel in Bogota…The Colombian national soccer team bus making its way through a large crowd of fans who gathered in front of Hilton Bogotá to get a glimpse of their heroes.

Throughout our stay, our family felt extremely welcome and well taken care of — as if we too were part of the Colombian national soccer team! I highly recommend this Hilton property and will definitely be staying there again if we return to Bogotá! Actually, make that WHEN we return to Bogotá.
