Best Downtown Austin Hotel and Austin Attractions for Families
Austin, Texas is a great place to visit. It has a bustling, city feel. There are art museums, historical sites, Barton Springs, and, as the Live Music Capital of the World, an active music scene. Nightlife is alive with 6th Street and year-round concerts. There are hundreds of events and plenty of fun things to do in Austin with kids for families traveling to the Lone Star State.
The Austin area sees nearly 20 million visitors a year, with a significant number of those visitors traveling on business. I travel to Austin at least once a year on business — usually two or three times — and I need a family friendly hotel in Austin, Texas so my family can join me as I attend conferences and meetings.
Best Downtown Austin Hotel
Hilton Austin is conveniently located across the street from the Austin Convention Center. I’ve stayed at several other properties in the city (when I didn’t get to choose my hotel) and this Hilton is by far the best. Being a mere 50 steps from your meeting space is invaluable when you are balancing six to seven hours of meetings with family time at breakfast and in the evenings. The rooftop pool is one of my kids’ favorite hangouts when I’m in meetings.
A Few of Our Favorite Austin Attractions
For spring and fall conferences, we enjoy the beautiful walk from Hilton Austin into downtown. Don’t miss the Capitol Building, a beautiful example of granite architecture and Texas history. Walking the hallowed halls of the Capitol is fun no matter how many times you’ve visited. I’ve only caught the legislators in session once, but it’s definitely worth seeing them in action and teaching the kids a civics lesson.
Another place we visit almost every trip is the Bullock Texas State History Museum. There is an IMAX theater, as well as several floors of fascinating exhibits. All of that, however, is overshadowed by the interactive theater. It never gets old!
Thinkery, Austin’s new children’s museum, is ah-maaa-zing! There are plenty of fun, interactive games and nooks to keep kids of all ages engaged for hours.
The final not-to-miss Austin attraction is an event, not a location. Under the Congress Street bridge live about 1.5 MILLION bats. Hundreds of people show up nightly to watch the bats fly into the night to eat their insect dinners. Bat-watching cruises are available, but we’ve always viewed the spectacle from the running trails. If you choose to do so as well, plan to arrive early.
Keep Austin Weird
Austin is so diverse that you can never exhaust the opportunities available because they change almost daily. Austin attractions for travelers of all ages abound. Get lost Deep in the Heart of Texas!
