The 4 Must-Try Malaysian Breakfast Foods
When we talk about “Malaysian food,” there are so many unique culinary traditions such as Malay, Chinese, Indian and more all intertwined in Kuala Lumpur.
When planning a visit to KL, make sure you start your days right with these top 4 traditional Malaysian breakfasts, or “sarapan pagi.”
1. Nasi Lemak
I grew up eating and loving Nasi Lemak! My favourite stall is Nasi Lemak@Tanglin – next to the Methodist Girl’s School. As Malaysia’s national dish, it is composed of a bed of coconut rice served with spicy chili paste (sambal), garnished with crunchy dried anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, sliced cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. It’s traditionally wrapped in a banana leaf parcel.
This mouthful of different spices and textures will leave you wanting for more! Although, there is one crucial tip – when eating the traditional packet of Nasi Lemak, it should always be eaten by bare hand (ditch those forks and spoons!). The dish is more flavorful this way. A glass of chilled water is also good company as this dish can be very hot and spicy.
2. Pork Mee (Pork Noodle)
During my college years, this is the dish that I could have 3 times a day, 5 times a week!
OUG (the main township of KL) has one of the best stalls serving pork noodles – Restaurant Sun Sea Pork Noodle @Taman OUG KL. A few tips to keep in mind while ordering a bowl of noodles:
- First, choose between soupy noodles (noodles mixed with a sweet black sauce) or dry noodles (soup served separately from the noodles).
- Second, select from yellow noodles, mee hoon (vermicelli), “kuey teow” (flat noodles), “Lor She Fan” (rat noodles) or a mixture of two noodles.
- Third, select condiments by elimination. A bowl of pork noodles comes with a generous heap of sliced lean pork, mince pork, liver, intestines, kidney and vegetables. Some stalls will also include seafood such as clams, squids and prawns. If more protein is desired, request an additional egg.
- Last but not least is the size of the bowl; select normal or large.
The lengthy exchange is worth it when you taste the deeply flavoured pork broth and noodles. A small side plate of soy sauce and chopped chilies usually accompanies the soup.
3. Half-Boiled Eggs
A light, traditional breakfast is the half-boiled egg. The eggs are placed in a half boiled egg maker; boiled water is poured into the vessel until the water drains off slowly. This leaves a perfectly cooked half boiled egg!
It is common for the eggs to be served on a warmed plate. Break the eggs in two, and it should have a runny yolk with an almost opaque egg white. Sprinkle some ground white pepper and a dash of soy sauce. Then mix the eggs to your liking, and gulp it down or dip it with toasted bread.
4. Roti Canai
Roti Canai (Indian flatbread) can be found in any mamak stall, but my favourite is Steven’s corner @Taman OUG.
The dough is coated with ghee (Indian butter), tossed and flipped until thin, and then is pan-fried. The result is a crispy, flaky texture similar to a thick puff pastry. It’s usually served with dhal (lentil curry), but it can be served either as a savoury or a sweet dish.
To order the filling most fitting to your tastes, simply replace “Canai” with the ingredient you would like in the center. A few variations include:
- Roti planta (margarine)
- Roti pisang (banana)
- Roti sardine (sardines)
- Roti telur (egg)
- Roti kaya (sweet coconut-egg jam)
- Roti tisu (plain roti served ultra thin!)
