Big Change in Park City Ski Resort!
Winter is in the very near future and that means it’s time to get your ski gear out of storage and get ready to hit the slopes! Park City Mountain Resort in Utah has recently been undergoing major changes heading into the season, so be sure to catch-up below!
Vail Resorts, one of the largest purveyors of mountain ski resorts and lodging in the world, owns and operates 12 ski resorts worldwide with nearly 5,000 mountain lodging rooms. Founded in the early 1960s by a former WWII ski trooper in Vail, CO, the company has a rich history in operating successful resorts. Vail purchased Canyons in 2013 and Park City Mountain Resort in 2014, with plans to combine both. The two resorts add to the company’s collection of 12 mountain resorts, and together, after Vail’s $50M transformation, they will become the largest ski resort in North America. Canyons will now be named the Canyons Village Area of Park City Mountain Resort, Canyons logo will replace PCMR’s previous logo, and both resorts will operate as part of Park City Mountain Resort, with the Interconnect Gondola joining the two areas over the top of the Wasatch Mountains.
Guests of Sunrise Lodge are in a great place to enjoy all that Park City Mountain Resort has to offer. In the Summer, we are just across the street from Canyons Village, with free concerts, a brand-new 18 hole PGA course, mini golf, zip lines, hiking, mountain biking, shops and restaurants. Guests can ride our complimentary shuttle to PCMR for the Alpine Slide, mountain dining, and summer carnival activities.
In the winter, our Ski Valet places guest’s snowboards and skis next to the Sunrise Lift, where guests can access the Canyons Village and PCMR via the Interconnect Gondola by traveling only a few steps up the hill from Sunrise Lodge to the lift. Guests are able to ski back into the property at the end of the day, and take full advantage of our amenities, including our outdoor heated pool and two Jacuzzis, open year-round. Guests can also take our complimentary shuttle to the base of PCMR, then take the Gondola back to Canyons Village and ski back into Sunrise Lodge. Guests who have the EPIC ski pass can also take advantage of snowboarding and skiing at the largest ski resort in North America.
Canyons resort area opened as Park City West in 1968. In 1975 the resort changed ownership and was renamed ParkWest. Another name change to Wolf Mountain happened in 1995, and in 2007 the area was renamed The Canyons by the American Skiing Company. In 2008, Talisker Corporation purchased The Canyons, and in 2010 renamed the area “Canyons” after installing 2 high-speed quad lifts, a ski beach, and making multiple upgrades to the base area and mountain lodges of the 4,000 acre resort, the largest in Utah.
Park City Mountain Resort opened in 1963 as Treasure Mountain. Originally, skiers went through a mine tunnel and up a mine shaft to ski back down. In 1966, the name of the resort was changed to Park City Ski Area. In 1996, the area received its current name, Park City Mountain Resort. PCMR, with its 3,300 acres of terrain, was home to multiple events during the 2002, and was purchased by Vail Resorts, Inc. in 2014.
We are excited for this new development, and to be part of the new Park City Mountain Resort!
